Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the
World, straddling the Equator between the
Indian and Pacific Oceans.
The name Indonesia has its roots in two
Greek words: "Indos" meaning Indian and
"Nesos" which means islands. There are
estimated to be a total of 17,508 islands,
of which only about 6,000 are inhabited.
The main islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan,
Sulawesi, and Java, are most popular, but
don’t dismiss the many smaller ones - they
often are the places you’re more likely to
find those real paradise beaches!
The nation's capital, Jakarta, dates back
to the year 157, and its name means City
of Great Victory. It’s a contrast of modern
western architecture & traditional culture.
It boasts excellent facilities for visitors,
with luxury hotels, fine restaurants, and
modern shopping centres as well as tourist
attractions such as Taman Mini Indonesia.
But the real beauty of Indonesia is in the
islands, and you should try to visit as many
as possible to get a true flavour of this
magical land.
