Despite being the largest country in Africa,
Sudan has precious little tourism. When you
consider how much it has to offer, and what
a warm & friendly people the Sudanese are,
it’s even more surprising how few travellers
actually get to see it.
It has a reputation as a troubled country,
and there are certainly a few areas where
you need to think carefully - and check the
latest advice - before going. But most areas
are safe, and visiting is as straightforward
as any European country.
The northeast of Sudan, along the Nile and
the Red Sea coast, offers similar experiences
as the Egyptian side of the border, but with
none of the maddening crowds or lines of
tour busses. Many people don’t even realise
that Sudan also has some pretty impressive
Pyramids and ancient monuments. Yet those
at Begrawiya, around 80 miles north east of
Khartoum, are simply stunning.
The other pre-conception is that Sudan is
one huge desert. It’s not. The Lybian Desert
in the north gradually fades towards a green
and relatively fertile bush country as you
head south toward the borders with Congo
and Uganda. To the east of the Nile are the
Nuba and Kassala Mountains, which offer
great touring country & some breathtaking
scenery.
It’s a country that will surprise & delight you.
